SUBLIMATION WITHOUT AN AIR FRYER
Sublimating onto glass or stainless-steel cups involves transferring dye sublimation ink onto a specially coated surface using heat and pressure. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide for both glass and stainless-steel cups:
🔹 Supplies Needed (for both glass and stainless steel):
-
Sublimation printer with sublimation ink (we can provide the prints).
-
Sublimation paper.
-
Heat-resistant tape.
-
Heat press or mug/tumbler press.
-
Shrink wrap (optional).
-
Protective gloves.
-
Cup or tumbler with sublimation coating.
🔸 Step-by-Step Process
🔹 1. Design Your Artwork
-
Use software to create or import your design.
-
Size the design to match the cup dimensions.
-
Flip the image horizontally (mirror image).
-
Print it on sublimation paper using a sublimation printer.
2. Prepare the Cup
🧊 For Glass Cups:
-
Use frosted or coated glass that is sublimation ready.
-
Clean the surface with a lint-free cloth.
-
Wrap the printed sublimation paper tightly around the cup.
-
Secure with heat-resistant tape.
🥶 For Stainless Steel Tumblers or Cups:
-
Use sublimation-coated stainless steel.
-
Clean the surface with a lint roller or alcohol wipe.
-
Wrap the printed sublimation paper tightly.
-
Use heat-resistant tape to hold the paper.
-
Use shrink wrap (if using an oven) or a tumbler press.
Heat Press or Oven Settings
✅ For Glass
-
Temp: 195–204°C
-
Time: 6–8 minutes.
-
Use convection oven, not a microwave or standard oven
-
Rotate halfway through for even heating.
✅ For Stainless Steel (tumbler press):
-
Temp: 190–204°C
-
Time: 50–70 seconds.
-
Pressure: Medium to firm.
🔹 4. Cooling and Peeling
-
Use heat-resistant gloves to handle hot cups.
-
Remove the paper and tape carefully while still warm or let cool slightly.
-
Avoid cold water on glass to prevent cracking.
-
Inspect for any fading or ghosting (means time/temp/pressure might need tweaking).
🔸 Tips for Success
-
Always use sublimation-coated blanks.
-
Make sure paper is tightly wrapped to avoid ghosting.
-
Test with a small design before full runs.
-
Use a convection oven that’s not used for food if going the oven route.
-
Use even pressure to avoid blurry images.
SUBLIMATION WITH AN AIR FRYER
🔸 Supplies Needed
-
Air fryer (large enough for your cup/tumbler).
-
Sublimation printer & sublimation paper.
-
Heat-resistant tape.
-
Sublimation shrink wrap.
-
Sublimation-coated glass or stainless-steel cup.
-
Heat-resistant gloves.
-
Scissors or craft knife (for removing shrink wrap).
🔸 Sublimation Process Using an Air Fryer
1. Design & Print
-
Create your design using software (we can supply these).
-
Mirror the image before printing.
- Print onto sublimation paper using sublimation ink.
2. Prep the Cup
For Both Glass & Stainless Steel:
- Clean the surface (lint roller or alcohol wipe).
-
Wrap the printed image tightly onto the cup.
-
Secure with heat-resistant tape.
-
Slip the cup into sublimation shrink wrap (preferred for air fryer).
-
Use a heat gun to shrink it around the cup if needed.
3. Air Fryer Settings
GLASS
- 190 °C
- 6–7 minutes
- Use silicone wrap or shrink wrap. Avoid cold shock afterward.
STAINLESS STEEL
- 190°C
- 5–6 minutes
- Shrink wrap is best for pressure. Rotate halfway if needed.
4. Cooling & Removing Wrap
-
Use heat gloves to remove the cup.
-
Carefully cut off the shrink wrap.
-
Let the cup cool on a heat-safe surface.
-
Avoid placing a hot glass directly on a cold surface — this can cause it to crack.
🔸 Tips for Sublimating in an Air Fryer
- ✅ Use shrink wrap for best results in air fryers – it ensures even pressure.
- ❌ Do NOT use glass without a silicone or shrink wrap – it needs pressure and can crack without it.
- ✅ Don’t overload the fryer – do one item at a time for even heat.
- ❌ Don’t use your regular food air fryer (or clean it thoroughly afterward) – ink fumes may be unsafe for food use.
- ✅ Use a rotating tray or manually turn halfway for even heating, if needed.
